BSc (Hons) – Green Chemistry & Energy Chemistry

Join the forefront of sustainable science with the BSc (Hons) Green Chemistry program at Ayyappa Institute of Management Studies (AIMS). This innovative four-year degree is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to promote environmentally friendly chemical practices. By focusing on sustainable methods and renewable resources, this program prepares students to address some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

About the Course
Why Study Green & Energy Chemistry?

Green Chemistry is an essential field dedicated to reducing the environmental impact of chemical processes and products. It emphasizes the development of sustainable practices that minimize waste, reduce the use of hazardous substances, and promote the efficient use of resources. This specialization prepares students to become leaders in creating a sustainable future through chemistry.

Specialization Highlights

  • Sustainable Chemical Processes: Learn to design and implement chemical processes that are environmentally benign and resource-efficient.
  • Renewable Resources: Explore the use of renewable raw materials in chemical production, reducing dependence on non-renewable resources.
Pollution Prevention: Study methods to prevent pollution at its source through innovative chemical design and process optimization.
  • Energy Efficiency: Understand how to increase energy efficiency in chemical reactions and processes, contributing to sustainable energy solutions.
  • Green Analytical Chemistry: Gain expertise in analytical techniques that reduce environmental impact, including green solvents and energy-efficient instrumentation.

Green chemistry and Energy chemistry are transformative fields focused on sustainability and
environmental responsibility. Green Chemistry emphasizes designing chemical processes and
products that reduce or eliminate the use and generation of hazardous substances, promoting
safer solvents, renewable feedstocks, and energy-efficient methods. It aims to minimize waste
and environmental impact throughout a chemical’s life cycle. Energy Chemistry, on the other
hand, deals with the development and optimization of energy sources and storage, including
solar cells, batteries, fuel cells, and hydrogen production. It plays a vital role in advancing clean,
renewable energy technologies to address global energy demands and combat climate change.
Together, these fields drive innovation toward a greener, more sustainable future.

Pedagogy of Green Chemistry and Energy Chemistry focuses on fostering environmental
awareness, critical thinking, and innovation through interdisciplinary, inquiry based, and
practical learning approaches. In Green Chemistry, the teaching methodology emphasizes the 12
principals of green chemistry, integrating topics like waste minimization, atom economy, and the
use of safer solvents. Students are encouraged to analyze conventional chemical processes and
redesign them to be more sustainable. Experiments and case studies are tailored to highlight eco-
friendly practices, often replacing hazardous substances with greener alternatives in the lab.
The Energy Chemistry pedagogy involves understanding the chemistry behind traditional and
renewable energy sources, such as fossil fuels, solar, wind, biofuels, hydrogen, and batteries.
Teaching strategies include project based learning, modeling, and simulations to explore energy
storage, conversion, and efficiency. Emphasis is placed on real-world applications, helping
students understand the chemistry behind technologies like fuel cells and photovoltaic systems.
Both subjects promote active learning, problem solving and interdisciplinary collaboration by
combining principles of chemistry, environmental science, and engineering, preparing students
to address global sustainability challenges through innovation and responsible science.
